Tears for Srebrenica – 30th Anniversary Campaign for the Children of Bosnia

Remembering the past, help us build an future for children with disabilities in Bosnia

They say, ‘never again’, we say always remember, remember the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in your prayers. Emerald Network in collaboration with Muslim Aid are inviting you to help build a future for children with disabilities in Bosnia.

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide, where 8,372 men and boys were killed. By donating £30 we will gift a commemorative prayer pin badge – ‘tears for Srebrenica’ – help us raise beyond £8,372. We invite you all to share.

Background to the project - In Tuzla Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina, children with disabilities face daily challenges in accessing quality education, inclusion, and support. Many attend schools that lack the facilities, trained staff, and resources needed to help them learn, participate, and thrive, simply because they have a disability.

Muslim Aid, in partnership with the Pedagogical Institute of Tuzla Canton and the Institute Tuzla, is working to change this. Through our inclusive education project, we are improving the lives of children with disabilities (CWDs) by ensuring they have the support they need, in the classroom, in the wider school environment, and in the policies that shape their futures.

This project focuses on three core areas:

1. Improved Learning for Children with Disabilities

We are supporting 12 schools and one boarding school to deliver a more inclusive and effective learning environment by:

  • Recruiting and training 18 qualified teaching assistants
  • Providing 12 inclusive teaching toolkits to enhance classroom support
  • Organising 24 workshops for school staff, focused on inclusive education practices
  • Creating 12 individualised education plans tailored to the specific needs of each child

2. Better Wellbeing for Students and Teachers

For learning to take place, children must feel safe and supported. This part of the project will:

  • Renovate 16 rooms in the Tuzla boarding school, including dormitories, classrooms, and communal spaces
  • Equip a sports classroom and a fully functioning laundry room to improve day-to-day wellbeing
  • Deliver 16 peer-to-peer workshops in 4 schools to encourage empathy, inclusion, and mutual understanding between children with and without disabilities

3. Stronger Education Policy and Public Awareness

We aim to influence lasting change at the policy level by:

Contributing to the annual publication of the "School Stories" magazine, sharing insights and lessons learned from our work with children, teachers, and assistants

Supporting awareness events in seven schools on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3rd December), involving children, families, educators, and local authorities to promote inclusion and challenge stigma

Why This Matters

This project will directly benefit over 150 children with disabilities, 150 teachers, and many more families and community members. By improving day-to-day support, creating a more inclusive school environment, and influencing education policy, we are laying the foundation for long-term systemic change.

Your support will help us:

  • Equip and train those working closest to the children
  • Improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of children with disabilities
  • Contribute to long-term improvements in education systems and policy

The LIMITED EDITION prayer pin badge will be available to collect in person or available to post (postage/packing extra), we will be in contact with all donors kindly donating £30 or more.

Remember, every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and belong — regardless of ability. Your donation helps make that possible – please share this campaign with friends, as tears for Srebrenica become hope with prayer for the future generation. - ZAKAT eligible project
