In Tanzania, 130 children die every single day from malnutrition.

At Kijana Kwanza, every child who arrives is severely malnourished, having suffered from hunger, weakness, and the effects of a life without proper nutrition.

Whilst we serve traditional Tanzanian foods, we ensure that our children receive healthy and nutritious meals, including dairy, meat and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, with occasional supplements. In this way, we build up their strength, and ensure that they can focus on their education, which will provide them with the means to secure employment in the future.  

We emphasise sustainability as a means of reducing our costs in the long-term, freeing up more resources to help disadvantaged children and young people. To achieve this, we have our own 7-acre farm, where we grow fruits, vegetables and home dairy cows and chickens. 

We currently have over 700 chickens which provide a regular supply of eggs to the children and young people in our care. Eggs are an excellent source of protein, iron, vitamins, and fats. They boost a child's satiety levels and reduce hunger throughout the busy school day. Any surplus are shared with poor families or sold, to generate a small income for the charity.

We need your help to expand our chicken farm to 2,000 chickens to provide more eggs and support even more children and young people. 

It costs £55/$75 to buy a flock of 5 chickens.

About Kijana Kwanza (Young People First)

Kijana Kwanza is a grassroots charity based in Moshi, Tanzania, empowering children and young people to build a future without poverty. 

We directly sponsor over 250 children and young people, most of whom are orphaned, abandoned, or from single-parent families, providing education, vocational training, apprenticeships, and leadership development.

In 2024, we benefited 16,760 Tanzanians through sponsorship, campaigns, events, and microfinance initiatives. We sponsored 250 students, operated across 12 sites, and celebrated 42 new graduates.

In addition to student sponsorship, we offer services like English and computer classes, a Study Café, hardship grants, interest-free loans, and community events to support children, young people, and families in Moshi.
