A powerful eruption from Mount Semeru struck Lumajang on 19 November 2025. A two thousand meter ash column rose into the sky while hot clouds raced up to fourteen kilometers from the summit. Thick volcanic ash blanketed homes across Pronojiwo and Candipuro leaving thousands of residents affected and exposed to danger.

The disaster forced at least nine hundred fifty six people to evacuate to safer locations such as village halls mosques schools and the district office. Continuous ash fall has limited daily activities and made access to affected areas slippery and hazardous. Three residents suffered burn injuries from hot cloud exposure and are now receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.

Conditions on the ground remain uncertain. Additional hot clouds are still possible and heavy ash accumulation in both districts is disrupting respiratory health water access and sanitation in evacuation shelters.
